Ferragosto: From Ancient Rome to Modern Italian Celebration

Buon Ferragosto 🌞

Ferragosto, celebrated on August 15th, is one of Italy’s most cherished holidays, a joyful blend of ancient Roman traditions, medieval customs, and Christian devotion.

The name comes from the Latin Feriae Augusti (“Festivals of Augustus”), established in 18 B.C. by Emperor Augustus to provide a period of rest and celebration after the long harvest season. These festivities were meant to honor the gods of agriculture, ensure prosperity for the next season, and reward workers with days of rest.

During the Roman Empire, festivals, races, and public banquets marked the occasion. Over the centuries, Ferragosto became a time for travel and leisure, as even in the Middle Ages the Papacy encouraged processions and pilgrimages on this date.

With the rise of Christianity, Ferragosto merged with the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, commemorating her ascent to heaven. This fusion made August 15th both a cultural holiday and a sacred day in Italy, observed with religious ceremonies, family gatherings, and summer festivities.

Today, Italians celebrate Ferragosto with seaside trips, mountain escapes, traditional feasts, and fireworks, a true moment of joy, rest, and community spirit.

The Thai-Italian Chamber of Commerce warmly wishes everyone a happy Ferragosto, filled with sunshine, laughter, and love.
